Det anspr\u00e5ksl\u00f6sa virket har dock en rad f\u00f6rdelar att erbjuda: framf\u00f6r allt kan det&nbsp;<em>odlas<\/em>, vilket g\u00f6r att det \u00e4r b\u00e5de h\u00e5llbart och billigt. Dessutom \u00e4r det v\u00e4lbekant, l\u00e4tt att arbeta med, snyggt och biologiskt nedbrytbart. Av alla dessa sk\u00e4l s\u00f6ker forskarna efter s\u00e4tt att g\u00f6ra tr\u00e4 \u00e4nnu b\u00e4ttre genom toppmodern nanoteknik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I en artikel i&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>&nbsp;f\u00f6rra \u00e5ret presenterade forskare vid University of Maryland under ledning av Liangbing Hu&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature25476.epdf?referrer_access_token=cJpPWSnTRmH2XRjenu2_adRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0MG2hll_xgM9H0JWZ6-radSuIy4QJG9gHuIczt6rkKbME4xq4wJ3Jk3j3zhkEirmvlcN-g_4wMca3yz4wUl2r6ffZsGOQaehErCno-vFwOX1s5BMfYlclYjZQIkOzyRgv_rKluzBDryBxRqYGYYflHxR8KGN_-2XjVSJN5jiCFiH4Bx0xDPhcNnt-DTBuHZkD2l1EftjMBZJZZCg_99d0PYrxmDjIly64iwdwasmhbD2FjocKMUYxBHm9MooSg4iZNOMCMhDADJRsVtWeEKtCgB&amp;tracking_referrer=www.scientificamerican.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">en enkel process som tredubblar densiteten hos vilket tr\u00e4slag som helst<\/a>, s\u00e5 att det blir 11,5&nbsp;g\u00e5nger s\u00e5 starkt. F\u00f6r att tillverka det h\u00e4r massiva \u201dsupertr\u00e4et\u201d b\u00f6rjade forskarna med att bl\u00f6tl\u00e4gga det i ett bad av natriumhydroxid (NaOH) och natriumsulfit (Na2SO<sub>3<\/sub>). Dessa tv\u00e5 kemikalier verkar tillsammans f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 bort en del av ligninet och hemicellulosan \u2013 tv\u00e5 polymerer som det finns gott om i cellv\u00e4ggen \u2013 ur tr\u00e4et.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tr\u00e4et v\u00e4rms sedan upp och pressas samman. Utan lignin och hemicellulosa kollapsar tr\u00e4ets cellv\u00e4ggar helt och h\u00e5llet och de kvarvarande cellulosafibrerna \u2013 en tredje viktig polymer i tr\u00e4 \u2013 pressas t\u00e4tt samman till nanofibrer. \u201dGenom att delvis avl\u00e4gsna ligninet m\u00f6jligg\u00f6rs h\u00f6g kompression med 80&nbsp;% volymminskning\u201d, s\u00e4ger Dai Jiaqi, som \u00e4r en av forskarna i Liangbings team. \u201dDe naturliga porerna i tr\u00e4et sluts, vilket ger h\u00f6gre densitet och st\u00f6rre v\u00e4tebindning och d\u00e4rmed h\u00f6gre mekanisk styrka\u201d, s\u00e4ger Dai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.bluebeam.com\/se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/strxur-superWood-inline1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78534\" width=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.bluebeam.com\/se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/strxur-superWood-inline1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.bluebeam.com\/se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/strxur-superWood-inline1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.bluebeam.com\/se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/03\/strxur-superWood-inline1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Den slutliga produkten \u00e4r ett stycke virke som har st\u00f6rre dragh\u00e5llfasthet \u00e4n de flesta metaller, men som \u00e4r betydligt l\u00e4ttare. Fem lager av materialet skulle kunna stoppa en kula n\u00e4stan lika bra som kevlar, och skulle d\u00e4rf\u00f6r kunna bli en billig, l\u00e4ttviktig kroppsrustning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men f\u00f6rdelarna med supertr\u00e4et slutar inte d\u00e4r. F\u00f6rra m\u00e5naden publicerade Liangbings team en ny unders\u00f6kning,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/364\/6442\/760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">den h\u00e4r g\u00e5ngen i&nbsp;<em>Science<\/em><\/a>, som visade hur samma process med att avl\u00e4gsna lignin ocks\u00e5 kan g\u00f6ra tr\u00e4 superreflexivt. N\u00e4stan hundra procent av synligt ljus studsar tillbaka, och bara en liten gnutta n\u00e4ra infrar\u00f6d str\u00e5lning absorberas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resultatet blir ett material som \u00e4r svalare \u00e4n den omgivande temperaturen, till och med n\u00e4r det placeras i direkt solljus. Anv\u00e4nt i en byggnad ber\u00e4knar teamet att supertr\u00e4et skulle kunna ge energibesparingar p\u00e5 mellan 20&nbsp;% och 60&nbsp;%. Allra mest skulle man kunna tj\u00e4na i varma och torra klimat d\u00e4r luftkonditionering ofta \u00e4r en stor kostnad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sedan den f\u00f6rsta artikeln publicerades i&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>&nbsp;har Liangbing och hans team formligen \u00f6versv\u00e4mmats av samtal med fr\u00e5gor om den nya tekniken. Uppm\u00e4rksamheten ledde till grundandet av InventWood, ett f\u00f6retag som fokuserar p\u00e5 att f\u00f6ra ut de h\u00e4r teknikerna fr\u00e5n laboratoriet till den verkliga v\u00e4rlden. Det m\u00e5let hoppas man enligt f\u00f6retagets CEO Josh Cable kunna uppn\u00e5 inom de n\u00e4rmaste 9\u201312 m\u00e5naderna. F\u00f6retaget har redan f\u00e5tt st\u00f6d fr\u00e5n US Department of Energy, till exempel i form av ett ARPA-E-stipendium f\u00f6r att finansiera ytterligare forskning om hur supertr\u00e4et kan anv\u00e4ndas som ers\u00e4ttning f\u00f6r kolfiber och st\u00e5l i fordonstillverkning. Cable ber\u00e4ttar att intresset kommer fr\u00e4mst fr\u00e5n \u201dst\u00f6rre f\u00f6retag inom bilindustrin, luftfartsindustrin, bygg- och anl\u00e4ggning och\/eller tillverkningsindustrin\u201d och att \u201ddiskussioner p\u00e5g\u00e5r just nu med stora, multinationella f\u00f6retag inom dessa marknadssegment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vilken kostnadsstruktur som kommer att g\u00e4lla f\u00f6r supertr\u00e4et i framtiden beror enligt Cable p\u00e5 storlek, form och n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndig bearbetning, men f\u00f6retagets slutliga m\u00e5l \u00e4r att g\u00f6ra produkten konkurrenskraftig j\u00e4mf\u00f6rt med befintlig teknik. Om de lyckas uppn\u00e5 det \u00e4r det kanske inte kolfiber eller titan som kommer att vara det mest h\u00f6gteknologiska materialet i din n\u00e4sta bil eller ditt n\u00e4sta hus, utan helt enkelt
