M\u00e5nga experter menar att betong \u00e4r det n\u00e4st mest anv\u00e4nda materialet p\u00e5 jorden, efter vatten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dBetong har en rad egenskaper som verkligen \u00e4r anm\u00e4rkningsv\u00e4rda\u201d, s\u00e4ger doktor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/physics.georgetown.edu\/emanuela-delgado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emanuela Del Gado<\/a>, som \u00e4r professor vid Georgetown University och forskar i komplexa material som betong med hj\u00e4lp av en kombination av statistisk mekanik och datormodellering. \u201dT\u00e4nk att bara ta ett pulver och blanda det med vatten, och s\u00e5 f\u00f6rvandlas det, i rumstemperatur, till n\u00e5gonting med samma konsistens som sten. Efter bara n\u00e5gra timmar h\u00e5ller det att g\u00e5 p\u00e5.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Betongens materialegenskaper g\u00f6r det inte bara praktiskt att anv\u00e4nda utan \u00e4ven grundl\u00e4ggande f\u00f6r moderna byggmetoder. \u201d\u00c4ven om det blir v\u00e4ldigt kompakt\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela, \u201ds\u00e5 beh\u00e5ller det \u00e4nd\u00e5 ett n\u00e4tverk av mycket fina porer i olika storlekar. Dessa porer \u00e4r v\u00e4ldigt viktiga vid installationer, termisk och akustisk isolering och motst\u00e5ndskraft mot den omgivande milj\u00f6n.\u201d Det \u00e4r de h\u00e4r egenskaperna som g\u00f6r materialet s\u00e5 viktigt vid planering och uppf\u00f6rande av de flesta byggnader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Betongens koldioxidavtryck<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Men att betong \u00e4r s\u00e5 vanligt f\u00f6rekommande medf\u00f6r tyv\u00e4rr&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2019\/feb\/25\/concrete-the-most-destructive-material-on-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">milj\u00f6kostnader<\/a>. Betong orsakar en stor del av de h\u00f6ga koldioxidniv\u00e5erna i atmosf\u00e4ren och bidrar enligt en del med uppskattningsvis hela 8&nbsp;% av de m\u00e4nskligt betingade koldioxidutsl\u00e4ppen i hela v\u00e4rlden. \u201dBetong \u00e4r inte n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndigtvis s\u00e5 d\u00e5ligt n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller koldioxidproduktion\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela. \u201dProblemet \u00e4r att vi anv\u00e4nder s\u00e5 mycket av det.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vid framst\u00e4llning av cementmj\u00f6l, som blandas med mald kalksten och vatten f\u00f6r att tillverka betong, skapas koldioxidutsl\u00e4pp vid varje steg i tillverkningen. \u201dVid tillverkning av cementklinker, som \u00e4r den fr\u00e4msta best\u00e5ndsdelen i cement, m\u00e5ste kalksten hettas upp till mycket h\u00f6ga temperaturer i cementugnen\u201d, s\u00e4ger en talesperson f\u00f6r det schweiziska multinationella byggmaterialf\u00f6retaget LafargeHolcim Ltd. \u201dDetta g\u00f6r att kalkstenen kalcineras, och det \u00e4r denna kemiska reaktion som st\u00e5r f\u00f6r 60&nbsp;% av koldioxidutsl\u00e4ppen vid vanlig klinkertillverkning. Fossila br\u00e4nslen som anv\u00e4nds f\u00f6r att v\u00e4rma upp ugnen ger ocks\u00e5 koldioxidutsl\u00e4pp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emanuela s\u00e4ger att en del av de koldioxidutsl\u00e4pp som \u00e4r kopplade till betongtillverkning uppst\u00e5r genom andra faktorer, exempelvis det fossila br\u00e4nsle som kr\u00e4vs f\u00f6r att transportera materialet till byggplatser v\u00e4rlden \u00f6ver, liksom den h\u00f6ga energi\u00e5tg\u00e5ngen vid industriell betongtillverkning. \u201dI runda tal motsvarar ett ton cement ett ton koldioxid\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela. \u201dOch vi anv\u00e4nder flera miljarder ton betong varje \u00e5r.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LafargeHolcim har varit inriktat p\u00e5 att motverka milj\u00f6problemen i samband med betongtillverkning \u00e4nda sedan 1990. F\u00f6retaget anser sig med stolthet vara en av de mest koldioxideffektiva tillverkarna p\u00e5 marknaden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dVi minskar kontinuerligt v\u00e5rt koldioxidavtryck genom att minska andelen klinker till cement, och konsumera mindre energi per ton produkt genom att anv\u00e4nda alternativa br\u00e4nslen och effektivisera v\u00e5ra processer\u201d, s\u00e4ger talespersonen f\u00f6r LafargeHolcim, och till\u00e4gger att f\u00f6retaget koncentrerar en stor del av sin forskning och utveckling p\u00e5 att skapa l\u00f6sningar f\u00f6r minskade koldioxidutsl\u00e4pp vid varje steg i betongframst\u00e4llningen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ett av de nyare resultaten av denna anstr\u00e4ngning \u00e4r ett samarbete med Solidia Technologies. Tanken \u00e4r att skapa n\u00e5got som talespersonen beskriver som \u201dett nytt bindemedel som framst\u00e4lls vid l\u00e4gre temperaturer och genom en annan kemisk reaktion som genererar 30&nbsp;% mindre koldioxid \u00e4n vanlig Portland-cement.\u201d Talespersonen forts\u00e4tter: \u201dSolidia-cement h\u00e4rdas genom tills\u00e4ttning och absorbering av koldioxid i en patenterad h\u00e4rdningsprocess som minskar det totala koldioxidavtrycket med \u00f6ver 70&nbsp;%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">En komplex l\u00f6sning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r Emanuela inneb\u00e4r Solidia, liksom andra liknande, materialorienterade l\u00f6sningar p\u00e5 problemet med betong och koldioxidproduktion, ett steg i r\u00e4tt riktning. \u201dId\u00e9n att bygga med cement som kan absorbera och lagra koldioxid n\u00e4r det h\u00e5rdnar \u00e4r intressant\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela. \u201dDet visar att m\u00e4nniskor funderar \u00f6ver hur man ska kompensera att man anv\u00e4nder ett material som p\u00e5verkar milj\u00f6n. Jag tycker att det \u00e4r en intressant l\u00f6sning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Om branschen verkligen \u00e4r villig att satsa p\u00e5 att minska koldioxidutsl\u00e4ppen fr\u00e5n betongtillverkning m\u00e5ste det enligt Emanuela till \u00e4nnu st\u00f6rre f\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar, b\u00e5de p\u00e5 lagstiftningsniv\u00e5 och genom att samh\u00e4llet \u00e4ndrar sin syn p\u00e5 hur branschen ska bem\u00f6ta fr\u00e5gor om s\u00e4kerhet och h\u00e5llbarhet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dOm man vill l\u00f6sa det h\u00e4r problemet \u00e4r det inte en enda l\u00f6sning som g\u00e4ller\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dDet beh\u00f6vs mer forskning om vilka l\u00f6sningar som finns. Det \u00e4r detta som jag sysslar med \u2013 det h\u00e4r \u00e4r mitt s\u00e4tt att f\u00f6rs\u00f6ka hantera problemet. Men det har blivit mycket tydligt att vi m\u00e5ste kombinera det h\u00e4r med politiska \u00e5tg\u00e4rder som koldioxidskatter och \u00e4ndrade byggregler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talespersonen f\u00f6r LafargeHolcim till\u00e4gger att det faktum att man uppm\u00e4rksammar betongens koldioxidutsl\u00e4pp har effekter som str\u00e4cker sig mycket l\u00e4ngre \u00e4n till sj\u00e4lva tillverkningsprocessens milj\u00f6p\u00e5verkan. \u201dGenom att anv\u00e4nda betong med mindre koldioxid bidrar man till att minska koldioxidutsl\u00e4ppen f\u00f6r hela v\u00e4rdekedjan inom byggande\u201d, s\u00e4ger talespersonen. \u201dDet kan inneb\u00e4ra en enorm skillnad, eftersom det finns rapporter som visar att 40&nbsp;% av de globala koldioxidutsl\u00e4ppen kommer fr\u00e5n byggsektorn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Att kombinera nya tekniker med ett fokus p\u00e5 att skapa ett starkt regelverk f\u00f6r innovation tycks vara nyckeln till att minska koldioxideffekterna av en av
