En bekant till familjen Braddock, aff\u00e4rsmannen herr Robinson, ger den unge mannen ett entusiastiskt r\u00e5d: \u201dFramtiden finns inom plast. Fundera p\u00e5 saken. Ska du fundera p\u00e5 saken?\u201d Lakoniskt svarar Benjamin att visst, det ska han g\u00f6ra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4r man ser tillbaka ett halvt \u00e5rhundrade k\u00e4nns det n\u00e4rmast pittoreskt att ett material som \u00e4r s\u00e5 vanligt idag p\u00e5 den tiden betraktades som ny teknik. D\u00e5 erbj\u00f6d plasten pl\u00f6tsligt obegr\u00e4nsade m\u00f6jligheter att tillverka helt nya, praktiska saker som man aldrig kunnat \u00e5stadkomma tidigare. Framtiden fanns verkligen, som herr Robinson po\u00e4ngterade, inom plast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Idag ser bilden helt annorlunda ut. F\u00f6r m\u00e5nga framkallar ordet plast inte en bild av bekv\u00e4mlighet utan av avfall och milj\u00f6katastrofer. Det \u00e4r inte sv\u00e5rt att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 varf\u00f6r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enligt milj\u00f6organisationen Plastic Ocean International produceras \u00e5rligen \u00f6ver 300 miljoner ton plastavfall globalt, och varje \u00e5r hamnar s\u00e5 mycket som <a href=\"https:\/\/plasticoceans.org\/the-facts\/#:~:text=We%20are%20producing%20over%20300,into%20our%20oceans%20every%20year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8 miljoner<\/a> ton av avfallet i v\u00e4rldshaven. Vad allt det betyder f\u00f6r djuren som bor i havet ber\u00e4ttar naturforskaren Sir David Attenborough och andra ofta om.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Det g\u00e5r inte att neka till att plastavfallet \u00e4r ett problem, men stora anstr\u00e4ngningar g\u00f6rs ocks\u00e5 f\u00f6r att f\u00f6rs\u00f6ka hejda spiralen av skr\u00e4p som smutsar ner landskap och marina milj\u00f6er v\u00e4rlden \u00f6ver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sj\u00e4lvklart m\u00e5ste vi g\u00f6ra allt vi kan f\u00f6r att komma tillr\u00e4tta med problemet. Det \u00e4r dock v\u00e4rt att komma ih\u00e5g att plast \u00e4r mer \u00e4n bara bilden av en eng\u00e5ngsflaska som flyter i en flod eller en bortkastad livsmedelskasse som virvlar omkring i h\u00f6stvinden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plast inom byggande: ett mycket l\u00e4mpligt material<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4r plast anv\u00e4nds, och sl\u00e4ngs, p\u00e5 ett klokt s\u00e4tt \u00e4r det fortfarande ett lika bra material som det var p\u00e5 1960-talet. Faktiskt \u00e4nnu b\u00e4ttre. De tekniska framstegen har gjort plastmaterialen betydligt l\u00e4ttare \u00e4n motsvarigheterna av metall. Med nya tillsatser kan de ocks\u00e5 anv\u00e4ndas inom m\u00e5nga fler omr\u00e5den, d\u00e4ribland medicinteknik, f\u00f6rpackningar, fordonstillverkning och f\u00f6rst\u00e5s ocks\u00e5 byggande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4r man funderar p\u00e5 plast inom byggande t\u00e4nker man i allm\u00e4nhet p\u00e5 saker som r\u00f6r, dr\u00e4neringssystem och avlopp. Och det finns goda sk\u00e4l till det. Om s\u00e5dana delar tillverkas av plast v\u00e4ger de mycket mindre \u00e4n de metalldelar som anv\u00e4ndes tidigare. En annan f\u00f6rdel med systemen \u00e4r att de g\u00e5r mycket fortare att installera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Till exempel har Polypipe, ett brittiskt f\u00f6retag som tillverkar r\u00f6r och dr\u00e4neringssystem i plast f\u00f6r byggbranschen, ritat och levererat ett helt dr\u00e4neringsn\u00e4tverk f\u00f6r Southamptons kommun som ersatte de befintliga gjutj\u00e4rnsr\u00f6ren i ett 73&nbsp;meter h\u00f6gt bostadshus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tack vare systemets sammans\u00e4ttning kunde man installera det p\u00e5 40&nbsp;% kortare tid \u00e4n genomsnittet f\u00f6r ett s\u00e5dant arbete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visst \u00e4r plast praktiskt n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller en byggnads \u201dsm\u00e5delar\u201d, men man har ocks\u00e5 b\u00f6rjat bryta ny mark. Och n\u00e4r plasten har anv\u00e4nts och det \u00e4r dags att sl\u00e4nga den kan den g\u00f6ras om till nya produkter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ta v\u00e4gbygge till exempel. Entrepren\u00f6rer v\u00e4rlden \u00f6ver har utvecklat metoder f\u00f6r att omvandla plastavfall som inte g\u00e5r att \u00e5tervinna till ytmaterial f\u00f6r v\u00e4gar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ett s\u00e5dant f\u00f6retag \u00e4r MacRebur i Lockerbie i Skottland. De menar att f\u00f6r varje kilometer sex meter bred v\u00e4g som l\u00e4ggs med f\u00f6retagets produkt MR \u2013 som tills\u00e4tts till asfalt f\u00f6r att den ska r\u00e4cka l\u00e4ngre \u2013 anv\u00e4nds upp till motsvarande n\u00e4stan 741&nbsp;000 eng\u00e5ngsplastp\u00e5sar. Till ett ton MacRebur-mix g\u00e5r det \u00e5t motsvarande 80&nbsp;000 plastflaskor. Det h\u00e4r inneb\u00e4r ett stort kliv fram\u00e5t f\u00f6r plast inom byggande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ett annat exempel \u00e4r den 30 meter l\u00e5nga plastbron \u00f6ver floden Tweed i n\u00e4rheten av skotska East Dawyck. Den \u00e4r helt och h\u00e5llet tillverkad av rekonstruerat plastavfall som utvecklades av brittiska Vertech Composites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medan ny teknik anv\u00e4nds f\u00f6r att skapa alternativa anv\u00e4ndningsomr\u00e5den f\u00f6r allm\u00e4nt plastavfall, genererar byggbranschen i sig en betydande m\u00e4ngd genom att till exempel anv\u00e4nda plastfilm och liknande produkter f\u00f6r att transportera material till byggarbetsplatsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men \u00e4ven d\u00e4r g\u00e5r utvecklingen fram\u00e5t. Man f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker hantera problemet genom att \u00e5teranv\u00e4nda f\u00f6rpackningar i s\u00e5 h\u00f6g grad som m\u00f6jligt, och l\u00e4mna plast som inte g\u00e5r att \u00e5teranv\u00e4nda till \u00e5tervinning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Byggnader av plast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Men man ska inte tro att det bara handlar om att hitta s\u00e4tt att skapa en cirkul\u00e4r ekonomi f\u00f6r plasten i byggsektorn. Branschen har ocks\u00e5 b\u00f6rjat bli mer \u00f6ppen f\u00f6r att rita byggnader d\u00e4r plast integreras i sj\u00e4lva byggmaterialet. Ibland g\u00f6r man mer \u00e4n att bara integrera \u2013 vissa byggnader \u00e4r faktiskt helt byggda i plast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serpentine Pavilion fr\u00e5n 2015, till exempel. Den ritades av den spanska arkitektfirman Selgascano, och \u00e4r en amorf polygon med dubbla ytskikt som best\u00e5r av paneler tillverkade av en translucent, flerf\u00e4rgad, fluorbaserad polymer som fl\u00e4tats samman till en v\u00e4v.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4r paviljongen uppf\u00f6rdes f\u00f6r fem \u00e5r sedan var den visserligen en tillf\u00e4llig struktur, som var t\u00e4nkt att vara i\u00f6gonfallande och kanske lite kontroversiell. Men liksom andra unika byggnader av det h\u00e4r slaget visar den n\u00e5got av vad som g\u00e5r att uppn\u00e5 med plast. Det \u00e4r en byggnad som utforskar m\u00f6jligheterna med plast inom byggande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I andra byggnader anv\u00e4nds plast p\u00e5 ett mer integrerat s\u00e4tt. Foto: \u00a9 Iwan Baan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M\u00e5ngsidighet och h\u00e5llbarhet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastindustrin har alltid haft en n\u00e4ra anknytning till byggbranschen. I Storbritannien \u00e4r ett antal tillverkare av plastprodukter medlemmar i British Plastics Federation (BPF), som arbetar med att marknadsf\u00f6ra plasten som material \u00f6verallt d\u00e4r det g\u00e5r. Polypipe med flera f\u00f6retag ing\u00e5r i denna grupp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Man kan f\u00f6rst\u00e5 att BPF:s generaldirekt\u00f6r Philip Law ser med optimism p\u00e5 relationen mellan hans bransch och byggsektorn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dPlast \u00e4r m\u00e5ngsidigt och h\u00e5llbart, och spelar utan tvekan en nyckelroll inom byggande. Vi ser hela tiden nya innovationer p\u00e5 det h\u00e4r omr\u00e5det\u201d, s\u00e4ger Philip. \u201dPlast \u00e4r avg\u00f6rande f\u00f6r f\u00f6rnyelsen av infrastruktur, vare sig den \u00e4r byggd eller digital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dPlasten har isolerande egenskaper som ger st\u00f6rre energieffektivitet och d\u00e4rf\u00f6r spelar den en stor roll n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller att minska koldioxidutsl\u00e4ppen\u201d, till\u00e4gger han.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S\u00e5 precis som herr Robinson sa, s\u00e5 ligger framtiden verkligen inom plast.
