Eftersom lera finns i \u00f6verfl\u00f6d ute i naturen har vi m\u00e4nniskor byggt med det s\u00e5 l\u00e4nge som vi \u00f6ver huvud taget har byggt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Det finns otaliga exempel p\u00e5 historiska lerbyggnader, till exempel de&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexico.org\/15-must-see-adobe-structures-of-new-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">byar<\/a>&nbsp;av lersten som byggdes av ursprungsbefolkningen i New Mexiko och de<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboriginalculture.com.au\/housing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;australiska aboriginernas<\/a> flyttbara korsvirkeshyddor. De senare isolerades med lera f\u00f6r att skydda mot b\u00e5de kyla och v\u00e4rme. \u00c4ven p\u00e5 individuell niv\u00e5 brukar ett barns f\u00f6rsta f\u00f6rs\u00f6k att bygga vara med en blandning av jord och vatten \u2013 kanske en mur av lera i tr\u00e4dg\u00e5rden eller ett sandslott med vallgrav p\u00e5 en strandutflykt med familjen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dOm vi tittar p\u00e5 byggandet genom historien har m\u00e4nniskor hittat o\u00e4ndligt m\u00e5nga intressanta l\u00f6sningar som utnyttjar lokala resurser\u201d, s\u00e4ger&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/physics.georgetown.edu\/emanuela-delgado\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emanuela&nbsp;Del Gado<\/a>, professor vid Georgetown University. Emanuela studerar komplexa material med hj\u00e4lp av datormodeller och statistisk mekanik.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00e4rlden \u00f6ver har m\u00e4nniskor i \u00e5rhundraden skapat byggnader av de material som varit enklast att hitta: jord och vatten. Men hur kommer det sig att vissa av de h\u00e4r byggnaderna \u2013 som det gamla fortet vid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmf.org\/project\/ceremonial-enclosure-khasekhemwy-hierakonpolis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hierakonpolis<\/a> \u2013 har \u00f6verlevt, medan andra sedan l\u00e4nge f\u00f6rvandlats till damm? &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enligt Emanuela Del Gado finns det fortfarande mycket som vi inte vet om vad som f\u00e5r jordbygge att fungera. Att hitta svaren p\u00e5 de h\u00e4r fr\u00e5gorna skulle kunna ge oss nyckeln till ett nytt, modernt s\u00e4tt att anv\u00e4nda det h\u00e4r oerh\u00f6rt billiga och milj\u00f6v\u00e4nliga materialet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hur jordbygge fungerar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hur fungerar d\u00e5 jordbygge i praktiken? F\u00f6r att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 de grundl\u00e4ggande principerna f\u00f6r att bygga med jord kan du fundera p\u00e5 n\u00e4r du senast byggde sandslott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dN\u00e4r man bygger ett sandslott\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela, \u201db\u00f6rjar man med sand som \u00e4r torr och helt s\u00f6nderdelad. Vi vet att om vi bl\u00f6ter upp den lite, s\u00e5 kan vi f\u00e5 den att h\u00e5lla ihop. Sandkorn attraheras inte av varandra, men om man bara tills\u00e4tter tillr\u00e4ckligt mycket vatten s\u00e5 bildas tunna lager som f\u00e4ster sig vid de enskilda kornen och h\u00e5ller ihop sandslottet. Men eftersom vattnet \u00e4r just bara vatten i flytande form kommer det s\u00e5 sm\u00e5ningom att avdunsta mellan kornen. Om du l\u00e4mnar sandslottet i solen under resten av dagen b\u00f6rjar vattnet att avdunsta och bit f\u00f6r bit faller sandslottet samman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4r vattnet avdunstar mellan sandkornen blir den struktur som \u00e5terst\u00e5r instabil \u2013 och ramlar till slut ihop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best\u00e5ende jordbyggnader har d\u00e4remot vattnet djupare integrerat i materialets struktur, s\u00e5 n\u00e4r vattnet avdunstar s\u00e5 h\u00e5rdnar materialet ist\u00e4llet f\u00f6r att bli mjukare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dDet finns vissa leror, och d\u00e4rf\u00f6r i princip vissa typer av jord, som reagerar p\u00e5 ett s\u00e4rskilt intressant s\u00e4tt tillsammans med vatten. Det p\u00e5minner om vad som h\u00e4nder med cement\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela. \u201dStoftet reagerar med vattnet och det uppst\u00e5r ett material som \u00e4r klibbigt och som till sist h\u00e5rdnar som sten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De h\u00e4r materialen kallas geopolymerer. Hur och varf\u00f6r de fungerar \u00e4r fr\u00e5gor som Emanuela Del Gado och andra ledande forskare inom materialvetenskap just nu h\u00e5ller p\u00e5 att unders\u00f6ka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Varf\u00f6r \u00e4r jord viktigt?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nu n\u00e4r byggbranschen arbetar f\u00f6r att minska sin milj\u00f6p\u00e5verkan kan lokala material som lera och jord g\u00f6ra mycket f\u00f6r att reducera milj\u00f6skadorna av ett projekt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dInom byggande har man alltid arbetat med den n\u00f6dv\u00e4ndiga begr\u00e4nsningen att man vill f\u00f6rs\u00f6ka bygga med resurser som finns \u00f6verallt och \u00e4r relativt billiga\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela. \u201dDet \u00e4r ett av sk\u00e4len till att cement \u00e4r ett s\u00e5 vanligt byggmaterial \u2013 det g\u00e5r att framst\u00e4lla av sten \u00f6verallt p\u00e5 jorden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men att producera cement \u00e4r s\u00e4rskilt skadligt f\u00f6r milj\u00f6n \u2013 s\u00e5 till den grad att vissa forskare kallar betong (som tillverkas av cement) \u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2019\/feb\/25\/concrete-the-most-destructive-material-on-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">v\u00e4rldens mest destruktiva material<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;Emanuela menar att en b\u00e4ttre f\u00f6rst\u00e5else f\u00f6r hur jord och lera fungerar skulle kunna hj\u00e4lpa branschen att v\u00e4sentligt minska anv\u00e4ndningen av betong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dI teorin skulle man kunna blanda en viss m\u00e4ngd vanligt cementpulver med en geopolymer som utfyllnad\u201d, s\u00e4ger Emanuela. \u201dD\u00e5 skulle man kunna minska m\u00e4ngden cement som anv\u00e4nds i varje byggnad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En s\u00e5dan minskning skulle leda till stora effekter f\u00f6r byggbranschens milj\u00f6avtryck \u2013 fr\u00e5n att reducera m\u00e4ngden vatten som kr\u00e4vs f\u00f6r att gjuta cementbyggnader till att minska de koldioxidutsl\u00e4pp som \u00e4r f\u00f6rknippade med cementtillverkning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forntida teknik, modern forskning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Att man lyckades skapa geopolymerer vid gamla jordbyggen tycks till stor del ha varit ett resultat av att man pr\u00f6vade sig fram. Byggarna experimenterade med lokalt tillg\u00e4ngliga material f\u00f6r att skapa starkare strukturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dEtt utm\u00e4rkt exempel p\u00e5 hur byggare anv\u00e4nde lokala material \u2013 kanske till och med avfall \u2013 som komponent i byggmaterial \u00e4r Kinesiska muren, d\u00e4r man har hittat sp\u00e5r av&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/asia\/china\/7785842\/Great-Wall-of-Chinas-strength-comes-from-sticky-rice.html#:~:text=Workers%20built%20the%20Ming%20dynasty,places%20weeds%20still%20cannot%20grow.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risproteiner<\/a>&nbsp;i murbruket\u201d, ber\u00e4ttar Emanuela.
