Fr\u00e5n utsidan ser den f\u00e4rdiga byggnaden likadan ut som de dussintals andra hotell som LendLease har byggt genom \u00e5ren. Men ist\u00e4llet f\u00f6r en konventionell stomme med st\u00e5ldubbar har man f\u00f6r det h\u00e4r hotellet anv\u00e4nt korslimmat tr\u00e4, som \u00e4r en typ av massivtr\u00e4 som har varit popul\u00e4rt i Europa i flera \u00e5rtionden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resultatet blev att Lendlease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-Story-CLT-Hotel-WoodWorks-Case-Study-Redstone-Arsenal-01-05-16.pdf\">kunde minska byggtiden med 37&nbsp;% och utnyttja 44&nbsp;% f\u00e4rre arbetstimmar<\/a>. Detta lyckades byggf\u00f6retaget uppn\u00e5 med en arbetsstyrka p\u00e5 bara elva personer \u2013 tre erfarna snickare som fick hj\u00e4lp av \u00e5tta arbetsl\u00f6sa veteraner som utbildades p\u00e5 plats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Att det g\u00e5r snabbt och enkelt att bygga \u00e4r bara tv\u00e5 av de m\u00e5nga f\u00f6rdelar som korslimmat tr\u00e4 har. Massivt tr\u00e4 \u00e4r ocks\u00e5 strukturellt h\u00e5llfast, milj\u00f6m\u00e4ssigt h\u00e5llbart och snyggt. Tack vare de nyligen \u00e4ndrade byggreglerna kan byggnader av massivtr\u00e4 nu byggas h\u00f6gre \u00e4n man n\u00e5gonsin tidigare har f\u00e5tt lov att g\u00f6ra med tr\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vad exakt \u00e4r d\u00e5 massivtr\u00e4?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Massivtr\u00e4 g\u00f6r att litet tr\u00e4 blir stort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Massivtr\u00e4 \u00e4r en form av konstruerat tr\u00e4 som utg\u00e5r fr\u00e5n tr\u00e4partiklar, tr\u00e4fibrer, tr\u00e4faner och tr\u00e4skivor. Tillverkaren fogar sedan samman delarna med hj\u00e4lp av lim, spik eller passning och f\u00e5r fram st\u00f6rre tr\u00e4stycken som kan bli till bj\u00e4lkar, plattor, v\u00e4ggar och golv. Den f\u00e4rdiga produkten beh\u00e5ller tr\u00e4ets l\u00e4tta vikt, men \u00e4r betydligt mer h\u00e5llfast \u00e4n massivt virke i liknande storlek. Det beror p\u00e5 att det konstruerade tr\u00e4et g\u00f6r de defekter som finns i varje stycke tr\u00e4 slumpm\u00e4ssiga. D\u00e4rmed kan man utnyttja material som kanske inte passar till andra anv\u00e4ndningsomr\u00e5den.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resultatet \u00e4r en rad olika typer av massivtr\u00e4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Korslimmat tr\u00e4 tillverkas genom att man l\u00e4gger ett skikt lameller i en riktning, och sedan l\u00e4gger n\u00e4sta skikt vinkelr\u00e4tt mot det f\u00f6rsta och skapar skivor som \u00e4r ungef\u00e4r 10\u201330&nbsp;cm tjocka och lika h\u00e5llfasta som st\u00e5l eller betong.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Spiklaminerat tr\u00e4 best\u00e5r av staplade lameller som sammanfogas med spik eller skruv. Spiklaminerat tr\u00e4 passar bra till golv, tak och hisschakt.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dymlat tr\u00e4 liknar spiklaminerat tr\u00e4, men \u00e4r sammanfogat med tr\u00e4dymlingar ist\u00e4llet f\u00f6r med spik.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Till limtr\u00e4 anv\u00e4nds staplar av lameller som sammanfogas med fuktbest\u00e4ndigt lim. Limtr\u00e4 anv\u00e4nds ofta till golv, balkar, pelare och valv.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c4ven om vissa typer av massivtr\u00e4 passar till i stort sett alla till\u00e4mpningar, kan man vid behov ocks\u00e5 anv\u00e4nda hybridsystem med st\u00e5l eller betong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tre nyckelvinster med byggnader av massivtr\u00e4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Det finns flera f\u00f6rdelar med massivtr\u00e4, varav en \u00e4r den h\u00f6ga h\u00e5llfastheten i f\u00f6rh\u00e5llande till vikten. Det betyder att byggnader av massivtr\u00e4 \u00e4r l\u00e4ttare men minst lika h\u00e5llfasta som byggnader i liknande storlek av st\u00e5l, betong eller murverk. Eftersom tr\u00e4et v\u00e4ger mindre blir belastningen p\u00e5 grunden l\u00e4gre, vilket i sin tur inneb\u00e4r att arbetet under markniv\u00e5 blir l\u00e4ttare och mindre komplicerat, samt att man sparar p\u00e5 utgr\u00e4vning och betong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kostnaden f\u00f6r massivtr\u00e4 kan visserligen vara h\u00f6gre \u00e4n f\u00f6r andra material, men f\u00f6rkortade byggtider och mindre behov av arbetskraft v\u00e4ger upp kostnaden mer \u00e4n v\u00e4l. Korslimmat tr\u00e4 kan f\u00f6rtillverkas och s\u00e5gas till exakt f\u00f6r att uppfylla kraven p\u00e5 \u00f6ppningar och anslutningar, till exempel d\u00f6rrar, f\u00f6nster och ventiler, ber\u00e4ttar Paul Coats, Southeast Regional Manager p\u00e5 <a href=\"https:\/\/awc.org\/\">American Wood Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Med just-in-time-leverans av komponenter sparar man utrymme p\u00e5 byggarbetsplatsen. Lyft och montering av delar som \u00e4r tillverkade f\u00f6r att passa sparar ocks\u00e5 in pengar p\u00e5 arbetskraft \u2013 och g\u00f6r dessutom arbetet s\u00e4krare, eftersom det inte kr\u00e4vs lika m\u00e5nga arbetare inom lyftkranens radie och sv\u00e4ngfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r det andra har massivtr\u00e4 visat sig vara en h\u00e5llbar och milj\u00f6v\u00e4nlig produkt. Tillverkningen av st\u00e5l och betong st\u00e5r f\u00f6r omkring 8&nbsp;% av de \u00e5rliga utsl\u00e4ppen av v\u00e4xthusgaser globalt, enligt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masstimberreport.com\/\">North American Mass Timber State of the Industry Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dN\u00e4r man bygger med massivtr\u00e4 blir sj\u00e4lva byggnaden en plats f\u00f6r att binda kol\u201d, s\u00e4ger Arnie Didier, Chief Operating Officer p\u00e5 Forest Business Network i Portland, Oregon. \u201dN\u00e4r man planterar om skogen blir \u00e4ven den en plats f\u00f6r att binda kol.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Det finns dock motst\u00e5ndare som h\u00e4vdar att tillverkarna kommer att kalhugga skogen f\u00f6r att framst\u00e4lla massivtr\u00e4, vilket ocks\u00e5 \u00e4r skadligt f\u00f6r milj\u00f6n. \u201dDet finns ett ansvar att anv\u00e4nda h\u00e5llbara skogsbruksmetoder f\u00f6r att framst\u00e4lla massivtr\u00e4 och h\u00e5lla skogen frisk\u201d, s\u00e4ger Arnie p\u00e5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestbusinessnetwork.com\/\">Forest Business Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r det tredje kan en byggnad av massivtr\u00e4, d\u00e4r sj\u00e4lva strukturen \u00e4r exponerad, ha en naturlig sk\u00f6nhet. M\u00e4nniskor upplever tr\u00e4 som varmare och mer v\u00e4lkomnande \u00e4n betong eller st\u00e5l, som kan k\u00e4nnas kallt och inte inbjudande. \u201dVarje g\u00e5ng n\u00e5gon g\u00e5r in i en av mina tr\u00e4byggnader m\u00e4rker jag att de reagerar helt annorlunda\u201d, s\u00e4ger arkitekten <a href=\"http:\/\/mg-architecture.ca\/about-us\/team\/\">Michael Green<\/a> i sitt TED-f\u00f6redrag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/michael_green_why_we_should_build_wooden_skyscrapers?language=en\">om varf\u00f6r vi borde bygga skyskrapor av tr\u00e4.<\/a> \u201dJag har aldrig sett n\u00e5gon g\u00e5 in i en av mina byggnader och krama om en pelare av st\u00e5l eller betong, men det har jag faktiskt sett h\u00e4nda i en tr\u00e4byggnad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Byggnaden kan ocks\u00e5 vara mer h\u00e4lsosam. Genom att anv\u00e4nda tr\u00e4 i den byggda milj\u00f6n kan man s\u00e4nka inv\u00e5narnas blodtryck och stressniv\u00e5er. Det \u00e4r en unik f\u00f6rdel med biofilisk \u2013 eller natur\u00e4lskande \u2013 design, menar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160412019336347?via%3Dihub\">Jie Yin med medf\u00f6rfattare<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Byggreglerna utvecklas f\u00f6r att omfatta massivtr\u00e4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>P\u00e5 de flesta st\u00e4llen i USA till\u00e5ter nuvarande byggregler inte att tr\u00e4byggnader konstrueras med fler \u00e4n sex v\u00e5ningar. Tack vare omfattande tester h\u00e5ller detta redan p\u00e5 att \u00e4ndras, s\u00e4ger Paul Coats. \u00c4ndringar som nyligen har gjorts i International Building Code (IBC) fr\u00e5n International Code Council medger en dramatisk \u00f6kning av den till\u00e5tna h\u00f6jden f\u00f6r tr\u00e4byggnader, fr\u00e4mst tack vare korslimmat tr\u00e4. Forskare inom ingenj\u00f6rs- och materialteknik har genomf\u00f6rt omfattande tester som visar att materialet uppn\u00e5r samma motst\u00e5ndskraft mot belastning, jordskalv och tyngdkraft som material som st\u00e5l och betong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I de nya modellreglerna f\u00f6r 2021 kommer maxh\u00f6jden f\u00f6r byggnader av massivtr\u00e4 att h\u00f6jas dramatiskt fr\u00e5n 6 till 18 v\u00e5ningar och fr\u00e5n 24 till 82 meter \u00f6ver markniv\u00e5. Det inneb\u00e4r att \u00e4ven h\u00f6ghus numera kan byggas av massivtr\u00e4. Paul Coats noterar att reglerna redan har antagits i vissa jurisdiktioner \u2013 d\u00e4ribland Oregon, Washington, Utah, Denver och British Columbia \u2013 som den h\u00e4r <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awc.org\/codes-standards\/code-adoption-map\">kartan \u00f6ver koder som antagits av American Wood Council<\/a> visar. Det f\u00f6rklarar hur Vancouver redan kan skryta med ett 18 v\u00e5ningar h\u00f6gt studenthem, Brock Commons, vars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GHtdnY_gnmE\">konstruktion h\u00e4r visas i en intervallvideo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\" style=\"border-color:#0083db\"><blockquote><p>\u201dVarje g\u00e5ng n\u00e5gon g\u00e5r in i en av mina tr\u00e4byggnader m\u00e4rker jag att de reagerar helt annorlunda. Jag har aldrig sett n\u00e5gon g\u00e5 in i en av mina byggnader och krama om en pelare av st\u00e5l eller betong, men det har jag faktiskt sett h\u00e4nda i en tr\u00e4byggnad.\u201d<\/p><cite>Arkitekten <a href=\"http:\/\/mg-architecture.ca\/about-us\/team\/\">Michael <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/mg-architecture.ca\/about-us\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green<\/a> i sitt TED-f\u00f6redrag om <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/michael_green_why_we_should_build_wooden_skyscrapers?language=en\">varf\u00f6r vi borde bygga skyskrapor av tr\u00e4<\/a>.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eftersom massivtr\u00e4 best\u00e5r av br\u00e4nnbara material \u00e4r det knappast \u00f6verraskande att brandh\u00e4rdigheten \u00e4r en kritisk faktor. Men p\u00e5 samma s\u00e4tt som en hel vedklabbe f\u00f6rkolnas i en brasa och bromsar f\u00f6rbr\u00e4nningen g\u00f6r \u00e4ven massivtr\u00e4 det. F\u00f6rkolningen bidrar till att bibeh\u00e5lla produktens strukturella integritet, \u00e4ven om den uts\u00e4tts f\u00f6r en direkt l\u00e5ga och intensiv hetta. Faktum \u00e4r att tester visar att korslimmat tr\u00e4 uppn\u00e5r minst <a href=\"https:\/\/constructionexec.com\/article\/fire-safety-of-clt-and-mass-timber-buildings\">tv\u00e5 timmars brandh\u00e4rdighet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f6r vissa till\u00e4mpningar kr\u00e4ver dock massivtr\u00e4 \u00e4nd\u00e5 ytterligare ett steg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dICC fastst\u00e4llde maxh\u00f6jden f\u00f6r byggnader av massivtr\u00e4 med utg\u00e5ngspunkten att tr\u00e4et skyddas av flera lager gips, som \u00e4r ett icke-br\u00e4nnbart material\u201d, s\u00e4ger Paul. \u201dElden och inventarierna brinner ner utan att byggnadens struktur p\u00e5verkas v\u00e4sentligt. Sprinklersystemen m\u00e5ste dessutom vara redundanta, och byggf\u00f6retagen m\u00e5ste vidta brands\u00e4kerhets\u00e5tg\u00e4rder under sj\u00e4lva byggnadsarbetet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skogen av byggnader i massivtr\u00e4 v\u00e4xer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masstimberreport.com\/\">North American Mass Timber State of the Industry Report<\/a> f\u00f6rutsp\u00e5r att fr\u00e5n och med nu och fram till 2034 kommer antalet byggnader i massivtr\u00e4 att f\u00f6rdubblas varje \u00e5r. Vid det laget kommer byggbranschen i Nordamerika att lagra mer kol \u00e4n den skapar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under 2019 uppf\u00f6rdes till exempel ungef\u00e4r 78 byggnader i massivtr\u00e4 i USA, p\u00e5 en sammanlagd yta av drygt 370&nbsp;000 kvadratmeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En faktor som bidrar till massivtr\u00e4byggnadernas starka profil \u00e4r att de \u00e4r popul\u00e4ra bland h\u00f6gteknologiska f\u00f6retag. Google, Facebook, Microsoft och Amazon h\u00e5ller alla p\u00e5 att \u201dta en ordentligt titt p\u00e5 massivtr\u00e4, och de gillar vad de ser\u201d, s\u00e4ger Arnie Didier. Faktum \u00e4r att Microsoft precis har f\u00e4rdigst\u00e4llt den <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/2020\/02\/wrns-studio-designs-largest-timber-project-in-north-america-microsoft\/\">st\u00f6rsta horisontella byggnaden av massivtr\u00e4<\/a> i Nordamerika, som en del av f\u00f6retagets campus i Mountain View i Kalifornien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medan nya byggnader visar det som uppfattas som vertikala, horisontella och estetiska begr\u00e4nsningar f\u00e5ngar massivtr\u00e4et byggares fantasi \u00f6ver hela v\u00e4rlden.
