I skapelser som High Line p\u00e5 Manhattan och <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebroad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Broad Museum<\/a> i Los Angeles \u2013 vars skulpterade fasad har blivit ett landm\u00e4rke f\u00f6r stadens konstdistrikt \u2013 skapar Liz utrymmen som engagerar alla som upplever dem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liz Dillers verk har en unik n\u00e4rvaro \u2013 en k\u00e4nsla av betydelsefullhet som tvingar betraktaren att stanna upp och engagera sig i omgivningen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Konstn\u00e4rlig inspiration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Det borde inte komma som n\u00e5gon \u00f6verraskning att Liz, som har designat ett antal museum \u2013 d\u00e4ribland den senaste utbyggnaden av <a href=\"https:\/\/dsrny.com\/project\/the-museum-of-modern-art?index=false%22%20%2F&amp;section=projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Museum of Modern Art<\/a> \u2013 b\u00f6rjade sin karri\u00e4r som konstn\u00e4r.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dJag studerade konst p\u00e5 Cooper Union\u201d, ber\u00e4ttar Liz. \u201dJag var intresserad av film- och multimediainstallationer. Jag r\u00e5kade f\u00e5 syn p\u00e5 en kurs som hette Architectonics (\u2019arkitektonik\u2019) i kurskatalogen och blev nyfiken p\u00e5 vad det var. Jag blev sakta men s\u00e4kert intresserad av diskursen kring arkitektur och fick ett bredare intresse f\u00f6r omr\u00e5det, men inte f\u00f6r yrket. Tidigare hade jag varit intresserad av fotografering och tidsbaserade media, men jag b\u00f6rjade t\u00e4nka i tre dimensioner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Till sin f\u00f6rv\u00e5ning blev Liz f\u00e4ngslad av hur hennes studiekamrater som l\u00e4ste arkitektur diskuterade det h\u00e4r nya mediet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dP\u00e5 konstskolan pratades det inte s\u00e5 mycket om vad man gjorde, vad det betydde och varf\u00f6r man gjorde det, eller hur man positionerade sig i f\u00f6rh\u00e5llande till historia eller teori\u201d, f\u00f6rklarar hon. \u201dP\u00e5 arkitektskolan pratade vi hela tiden om sj\u00e4lva disciplinen \u2013 dess historia och var det tangerade andra omr\u00e5den. Jag blev f\u00f6rf\u00f6rd av de samtalen, och best\u00e4mde mig f\u00f6r att skaffa en arkitektexamen, men inte med avsikt att g\u00e5 in i yrket. Det enda jag ville var att g\u00f6ra karri\u00e4r inom plastkonst och arbeta med skulptur och media p\u00e5 ett rumsligt s\u00e4tt. Jag blev mycket intresserad av att jobba med tid och rum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-accent-background-color has-accent-color\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OCKS\u00c5 P\u00c5 BUILT:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n\t<!-- SE Blog -->\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-audio\">\n\t    <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t    \t<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_HmSLO586zw?cc_load_policy=1&#038;cc_lang_pref=sv\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\t   \t<\/div>\n\t    \t<\/figure>\n\t\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-accent-background-color has-accent-color\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Liz spirande intresse f\u00f6r arkitekturens m\u00f6jligheter som konstn\u00e4rlig uttrycksform uppmuntrades av hennes mentor, John Hejduk, som var rektor p\u00e5 Cooper Union. \u201dOm jag hade befunnit mig p\u00e5 n\u00e5gon annan arkitektskola hade jag f\u00f6rmodligen inte stannat kvar, f\u00f6r jag var inte alls s\u00e4rskilt intresserad av att bygga\u201d, s\u00e4ger Liz. \u201dJohn Hejduk l\u00e4rde mig att arkitektur inneh\u00f6ll s\u00e5 mycket mer \u00e4n bara byggnader. Hans referenser vid den tiden var mycket selektiva, m\u00e5nga av dem var fr\u00e5n det tidiga 1900-talets litteratur, film, poesi, m\u00e5leri och skulptur \u2013 allt utanf\u00f6r arkitekturen. Att stiga in i Johns universum var befriande.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samtidigt blev Liz fascinerad av de samtida konstn\u00e4rerna i hennes hemmilj\u00f6 i New York \u2013 konstn\u00e4rer vars verk \u00e5teranpassade f\u00f6rh\u00e5llandet mellan konsten och den byggda v\u00e4rlden. \u201dJag var ocks\u00e5 fascinerad av det som h\u00e4nde runt omkring i realtid\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dDet h\u00e4r var i mitten till slutet av 1970-talet och Vito Acconci, Gordon Matta-Clark och Trisha Brown anv\u00e4nde alla alternativa rumsliga metoder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liz s\u00e5g de h\u00e4r konstn\u00e4rerna som f\u00f6rebilder f\u00f6r sin karri\u00e4r, som hon fortfarande f\u00f6rest\u00e4llde sig skulle utspela sig p\u00e5 gallerier, snarare \u00e4n att hon skulle konstruera just de h\u00e4r utrymmena. \u201dJag f\u00f6rest\u00e4llde mig att mitt arbete skulle relatera mer till de d\u00e4r konstn\u00e4rerna\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bortom byggande<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Efter sin examen beh\u00f6ll Liz sin egenartade inst\u00e4llning till arkitekturkonsten. &#8221;Ric [hennes m\u00e5ng\u00e5riga kreativa partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/ricardo-scofidio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ricardo Scofidio<\/a>] och jag b\u00f6rjade som dissidenter i b\u00f6rjan av 1980-talet och utmanade arkitekturinstitutionen som en i h\u00f6g grad frist\u00e5ende disciplin\u201d, s\u00e4ger Liz. \u201dVi best\u00e4mde oss f\u00f6r att skapa utrymme p\u00e5 v\u00e5ra egna villkor med v\u00e5ra egna agendor, oberoende av kunder, budgetar och juridiska begr\u00e4nsningar, och vi arbetade p\u00e5 l\u00e5nade eller stulna platser, alltid i allm\u00e4nhetens utrymme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ett av deras f\u00f6rsta arkitektuppdrag var ett projekt som inte hade f\u00f6rverkligats kallat Slow House. Det var t\u00e4nkt att existera i sk\u00e4rningspunkten mellan konst och arkitektur. \u201dV\u00e5r kund hade en vacker tomt i Sag Harbor med utsikt \u00f6ver havet mot horisonten\u201d, s\u00e4ger Liz. \u201dVi b\u00f6rjade med att fundera p\u00e5 hur man i fastighetsannonser beskrev vattenutsikt: havsutsikt, sj\u00f6utsikt, hamnutsikt, skyddad vattenutsikt, delvis vattenutsikt. Det fanns en nomenklatur som byggde p\u00e5 de h\u00e4r pyttesm\u00e5 skillnaderna.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\" style=\"border-color:#0083db\"><blockquote><p>\u201dVi lever i en tid d\u00e4r arkitekturen k\u00e4nns f\u00f6r l\u00e5ngsam. Fr\u00e5n det att man har en id\u00e9, till att man designar den, till att den \u00e4r byggd och bebodd tar s\u00e4llan mindre \u00e4n fem \u00e5r, och ofta tar det mycket l\u00e4ngre tid. Arkitekturen \u00e4r geofixerad, den \u00e4r tung, den \u00e4r kr\u00e5nglig och den st\u00e5r d\u00e4r den st\u00e5r f\u00f6r alltid. Dessutom \u00e4r den dyr.\u201d<\/p><p><\/p><cite>Liz Diller<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Id\u00e9n om havsutsikten som sj\u00e4lva sk\u00e4let till byggnadens existens inspirerade Liz och Ricardo att skapa ett utrymme vars funktion var inriktad p\u00e5 konsten att blicka ut mot havet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dSlow House blev helt enkelt en d\u00f6rr som ledde till ett stort panoramaf\u00f6nster som vette mot havet\u201d, s\u00e4ger Liz. \u201dMen vi ville g\u00f6ra mer \u00e4n att bara rama in utsikten. Vi ville spela in utsikten, spela upp det fina v\u00e4dret i d\u00e5ligt v\u00e4der, zooma in och panorera. Vi ville ut\u00f6ka visionen med videofunktioner. En livekamera monterades p\u00e5 en h\u00f6g murstock mitt emot skorstenen. Vyn fr\u00e5n kameran projicerades p\u00e5 en sk\u00e4rm framf\u00f6r panoramaf\u00f6nstret. Genom att de tv\u00e5 utsikterna lades p\u00e5 varandra fanns det ingen st\u00f6rre skillnad mellan den f\u00f6rmedlade och of\u00f6rmedlade upplevelsen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c4ven om Slow House \u00e4nnu inte har byggts, fortsatte denna f\u00f6rsta design att inspirera f\u00f6retaget som skulle komma att bli <a href=\"https:\/\/dsrny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diller Scofidio + Renfro<\/a> \u2013 och dess unika inst\u00e4llning till de byggnader man designar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>En flexibel inst\u00e4llning till rymd<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Det \u00e4r passande att <a href=\"https:\/\/dsrny.com\/project\/the-shed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Shed<\/a>, en av de designer som Liz \u00e4r mest stolt \u00f6ver, h\u00e4mtade inspiration fr\u00e5n ett annat orealiserat projekt: konstn\u00e4ren Cedric Prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cca.qc.ca\/en\/articles\/issues\/2\/what-the-future-looked-like\/32737\/1964-fun-palace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fun Palace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dV\u00e5r studio blev involverad i designen av The Shed i b\u00f6rjan av 2008, mitt under l\u00e5gkonjunkturen\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dTillsammans med v\u00e5r v\u00e4n David Rockwell svarade vi med b\u00e5de en fysisk och en teoretisk strategi f\u00f6r flexibelt byggande \u2013 en \u2019infrastrukturens arkitektur\u2019 d\u00e4r alla de olika kreativa facken kunde samlas under ett och samma tak. Vi f\u00f6reslog en arkitektur som var s\u00e5 flexibel att man till och med kunde \u00e4ndra storleken p\u00e5 dess markyta. Och nu, elva \u00e5r senare, \u00e4r The Shed en oberoende ideell organisation p\u00e5 offentligt \u00e4gd mark vid Hudson Yards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Shed kan \u00e4ndra form \u2013 och till och med storlek \u2013 beroende p\u00e5 behoven hos de m\u00e4nniskor som anv\u00e4nder den, en flexibilitet som Liz s\u00e4ger inspirerades av den frustration som hon ofta k\u00e4nner inf\u00f6r de samtida arkitektmetodernas l\u00e5ngsamhet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dVi lever i en tid d\u00e4r arkitekturen k\u00e4nns f\u00f6r l\u00e5ngsam\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dFr\u00e5n det att man har en id\u00e9, till att man designar den, till att den \u00e4r byggd och bebodd tar s\u00e4llan mindre \u00e4n fem \u00e5r, och ofta tar det mycket l\u00e4ngre tid. Dessutom \u00e4r den dyr.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Med The Shed hoppades Liz och hennes medarbetare kunna skapa en mall f\u00f6r en mer flexibel typ av byggt utrymme. \u201dArkitekturen st\u00e5r i motsats till samtidskonsten, som per definition st\u00e4ndigt \u00e4r i r\u00f6relse\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dUtmaningen \u00e4r hur man bygger en permanent byggnad f\u00f6r ett fack som st\u00e4ndigt utvecklas.
