Hon hade renoverat sitt eget badrum n\u00e4r v\u00e4nnerna b\u00f6rjade be henne att hj\u00e4lpa dem med liknande uppgifter. Hon tog sig med gl\u00e4dje an flera fritidsprojekt, och f\u00f6rvandlade utrymmen fr\u00e5n ruckel till att passa i inredningsreportage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dJag brukade riva allt och b\u00f6rja om fr\u00e5n grunden\u201d, s\u00e4ger Jennifer, som \u00e4r baserad i Washington, D.C. \u201dJag renoverade k\u00f6k, badrum, altaner \u2013 allt som mina v\u00e4nner ville ha gjort, och till sist b\u00f6rjade jag \u00e4ven renovera hela hus. Jag stormtrivdes fr\u00e5n f\u00f6rsta stund..\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer stod inte sj\u00e4lv med hammaren i h\u00f6gsta hugg utan hamnade naturligt i rollen som projektledare, d\u00e4r hon tog hand om rekrytering, arbetstilldelning, bygglov och projektsp\u00e5rning. Hon b\u00f6rjade g\u00e5 p\u00e5 byggkonferenser, n\u00e4tverkade som en galning (ofta fyra-fem dagar i veckan) och skaffade s\u00e5 mycket formell utbildning och s\u00e5 m\u00e5nga certifieringar som m\u00f6jligt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2018 gick Jennifer \u00f6ver fr\u00e5n bostadsbyggande till att arbeta med kommersiella fastigheter och startade <a href=\"https:\/\/blueteecc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BlueTee Construction Inc.<\/a> Idag s\u00e4ger hon: \u201dJag har aldrig haft mer att g\u00f6ra i hela mitt liv.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Att vara s\u00e5 uppbokad skapar dock vissa utmaningar \u2013 hinder som inte \u00e4r helt ovanliga f\u00f6r kvinnliga hantverkare i byggbranschen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dJag var naiv inf\u00f6r att driva ett kvinno\u00e4gt minoritetsf\u00f6retag i byggbranschen, och trodde att det skulle vara enkelt\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dSom person \u00e4r jag m\u00e5linriktad och jobbar v\u00e4ldigt h\u00e5rt, s\u00e5 n\u00e4r jag gick in i byggbranschen hade jag ingen aning om att det fanns s\u00e5 m\u00e5nga hinder. Till och med medan jag n\u00e4tverkade trodde jag att den st\u00f6rsta utmaningen skulle vara att vinna projekt. Nu inser jag att det bara \u00e4r ett av alla hinder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-accent-background-color has-accent-color\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK 2021:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n\t<!-- SE Blog -->\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-audio\">\n\t    <div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t    \t<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ECBWvNFb1tI?cc_load_policy=1&#038;cc_lang_pref=sv\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\t   \t<\/div>\n\t    \t<\/figure>\n\t\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-accent-background-color has-accent-color\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Det tog henne ungef\u00e4r ett \u00e5r av n\u00e4tverkande att vinna sitt f\u00f6rsta kontrakt, och det var n\u00e4r hon hade f\u00e5tt det som det verkliga arbetet b\u00f6rjade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dJag trodde att de anlitade mig f\u00f6r att jag visste vad jag h\u00f6ll p\u00e5 med, men s\u00e5 h\u00e4r i efterhand tror jag att m\u00e5nga f\u00f6retag ser en kvinna och t\u00e4nker \u2019okej, vi tar in den h\u00e4r personen och utnyttjar henne\u2019\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dMina entrepren\u00f6rer b\u00f6rjade k\u00f6ra \u00f6ver mig. Jag var inte bara den enda kvinnan p\u00e5 byggarbetsplatsen utan ocks\u00e5 den enda icke-vita personen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer minns hur hon ledde m\u00e5nga m\u00f6ten d\u00e4r hon blev tvungen att f\u00f6rsvara sig inf\u00f6r grupper som helt bestod av m\u00e4n, ofta p\u00e5 punkter s\u00e5 grundl\u00e4ggande som \u00e4ndringar av omfattningen av arbete som redan hade avtalats skriftligt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dDe kunde s\u00e4ga: \u2019Nej, det d\u00e4r kan jag inte minnas att vi har kommit \u00f6verens om\u2019\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dTill sist blev jag tvungen att s\u00e4ga: \u2019Vet ni, mina herrar, jag t\u00e4nker inte diskutera det h\u00e4r. Det h\u00e4r \u00e4r fakta, och dem h\u00e5ller vi oss till.\u2019 Jag var tvungen att bli en superkvinna bara f\u00f6r att f\u00f6rsvara helt rimliga \u00f6nskem\u00e5l som jag hade r\u00e4tt till.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d6ver 400 mil l\u00e4ngre bort, i Seattle, k\u00e4nner Boo Torres igen Jennifer Washingtons problem. Boo \u00e4r medgrundare av <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/tribalelectricllc\/home?authuser=0\">Tribal Electric<\/a>, Seattles enda kvinno- och queer\u00e4gda elentrepren\u00f6r. Boo sk\u00f6ter f\u00e4ltverksamheten medan hennes fru, Joanna Alcantara, har hand om kontoret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boo har jobbat som elektriker i n\u00e4stan 20 \u00e5r, och har en s\u00e4rskild passion f\u00f6r att visa att kvinnor \u2013 i synnerhet icke-vita queerkvinnor \u2013 kan klara sig utm\u00e4rkt i yrket. Det h\u00e4r intresset v\u00e4cktes n\u00e4r Boo var p\u00e5 en hantverksm\u00e4ssa i Seattle f\u00f6r m\u00e5nga \u00e5r sedan. Hon gick fram till elektrikernas bord och s\u00e5g d\u00e5 tv\u00e5 kvinnor som liknade henne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dJag s\u00e5g tv\u00e5 bruna kvinnor och t\u00e4nkte: \u2019Oj! Ni ser ju ut som jag. Kanske betyder det att jag ocks\u00e5 kan g\u00f6ra det h\u00e4r\u2019\u201d, minns Boo. \u201dJag pratade med dem, och de peppade mig verkligen att bli elektriker och ber\u00e4ttade vilket bra jobb det \u00e4r. Det finns ett sk\u00e4mt om att om man inte har en pappa, bror eller sv\u00e5ger som jobbar i branschen s\u00e5 g\u00e5r det inte att ta sig in. Men de visade mig att jag ocks\u00e5 kunde bli en framg\u00e5ngsrik elektriker. Det blev en viktig v\u00e4ndpunkt f\u00f6r mig.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Idag fokuserar Boo p\u00e5 att anst\u00e4lla och handleda kvinnor och icke-bin\u00e4ra i sitt f\u00f6retag, men hon menar att byggbranschen har l\u00e5ng v\u00e4g kvar att g\u00e5 n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller m\u00e5ngfald, j\u00e4mlikhet och inkludering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dP\u00e5 stora byggarbetsplatser lever och frodas rasismen fortfarande, liksom homofobin, sexismen och transfobin\u201d, s\u00e4ger hon. \u201dMan tror att allt s\u00e5nt \u00e4r borta, s\u00e4rskilt som det pratas s\u00e5 mycket om det n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller kontorskultur, men h\u00e4r i byggbranschen finns det i allra h\u00f6gsta grad kvar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tv\u00e5 s\u00e4tt att f\u00f6r\u00e4ndra<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>De inom byggbranschen som vill anamma en mer inkluderande kultur g\u00f6r klokt i att introducera f\u00f6ljande p\u00e5 sina f\u00f6retag:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Skapa en kultur med nolltolerans<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Enligt Boo m\u00e5ste det h\u00e4r b\u00f6rja med f\u00f6retagsledningen. De h\u00f6gst upp m\u00e5ste visa prov p\u00e5 respekt, acceptans och inkludering i ord och handling. B\u00e5de hon och Jennifer betonar att m\u00e4n som uttrycker sig negativt (vilket ocks\u00e5 g\u00e4ller s\u00e5 kallat \u2019harml\u00f6sa\u2019 sk\u00e4mt) om kvinnor, f\u00e4rgade och icke-bin\u00e4ra m\u00e5ste bli tillsagda av sina kollegor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dVita, heterosexuella m\u00e4n p\u00e5 de h\u00e4r byggarbetsplatserna m\u00e5ste s\u00e4ga till sina kompisar n\u00e4r de g\u00f6r n\u00e5got fel\u201d, s\u00e4ger Boo. \u201dDet borde inte vara mitt jobb att tala om f\u00f6r m\u00e4n att de inte ska vara sexistiska.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Washington menar att tills\u00e4gelser fr\u00e5n kollegorna skulle \u201dvara till oerh\u00f6rt stor hj\u00e4lp eftersom det skulle vara som en storebror som sa: \u2019H\u00f6rru du, s\u00e5 d\u00e4r s\u00e4ger man inte. Det \u00e4r inte r\u00e4tt.\u2019 Jag tror att chansen att beteendet upph\u00f6r skulle vara st\u00f6rre om det h\u00e4nde.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I en kultur med nolltolerans skulle utbildningar ges passande namn som fungerar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dVi m\u00e5ste sluta kalla det k\u00e4nslighetsutbildning, f\u00f6r det finns ingen i byggbranschen som bryr sig om k\u00e4nslighet\u201d, s\u00e4ger Boo Torres. \u201dM\u00e4nnen st\u00e4nger av om man anv\u00e4nder ett s\u00e5dant ord. Jag h\u00f6r ofta att f\u00f6retag har nolltolerans f\u00f6r sexuella trakasserier, men samtalet slutar d\u00e4r. Jag vill h\u00f6ra exempel p\u00e5 vad man inte ska g\u00f6ra. Till exempel, flirta inte med den h\u00e4r tjejen. Sk\u00e4mta inte p\u00e5 andras bekostnad, f\u00f6r det \u00e4r inte kul. Folk beh\u00f6ver p\u00e5tagliga exempel p\u00e5 vad som \u00e4r l\u00e4mpligt och inte.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>M\u00e4n m\u00e5ste vara \u00f6ppna f\u00f6r f\u00f6r\u00e4ndring<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dM\u00e4n \u00e4r vana vid att se byggarbete utf\u00f6ras p\u00e5 ett visst s\u00e4tt av en viss typ av person\u201d, s\u00e4ger Jennifer. \u201dDet finns mycket sexism i byggbranschen, och jag tror att f\u00f6r att \u00e5stadkomma verklig f\u00f6r\u00e4ndring m\u00e5ste entrepren\u00f6rerna komma \u00f6ver sin nuvarande syn p\u00e5 kvinnor som bygger. De m\u00e5ste se p\u00e5 kvinnorna utifr\u00e5n en j\u00e4mlik spelplan, respektera dem och deras arbete och l\u00e5ta dem sitta med vid bordet och h\u00f6ras.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sammanfattningsvis s\u00e4ger Jennifer: \u201dVi stakar ut en v\u00e4g f\u00f6r kvinnorna i branschen och skapar en mall som andra kvinnor kan f\u00f6lja.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
